China beckons to the world market, but how does China's market work? After 1980's, architects have burst China's door wide open and shaped a new country. Initially, the one and only client was the government. Today clients include local and international developers as well as individuals. This climate provides new opportunities for a range of architectural practices and commissions with regional, cultural and economic conditions offering new and evolving challenges. The first of this two-part spotlight on China investigates the architecture and urbanism of China from an outsider's perspective; a subsequent program in early March will bring architects and planners from China into conversation with their counterparts in New York to expand the exchange of ideas and information.

The second Roundtable of the "Asia Dialogues: Fertile Ground for Architecture" series will investigate the architecture and urbanism of China by bring architects from China into conversation with their counterparts in New York. Three Chinese practitioners provide an overview of the diversity of projects in Shanghai and Beijing as well as smaller cities across China. Work feature by variety of Chinese practices will examine the conditions for practicing in China, including the design process, relationships with clients and composition of project teams, among other topics.

The American Institute of Architects New York Chapter introduces a quarterly series on the evolution of architectural practice and projects in Asia. Beginning with China and then South Korea, this program series will look across and within the borders of Asia at the architecture of some of the most populated areas in the world.
