People's Architecture
   WANG SHU

In this lecture Wang Shu talks about the New Campus for China Academy of Arts in Hongzhou, China.

The first campus of the National Academy of Arts was built in Hangzhou in 1920s. The architect Wang Shu has expressed his critical interpretation of tradition in modern architecture in his design for the new campus. The campus is divided into north (completed in 2004) and south part (completed in 2007) set on two side of the elephant hill. The design of the entire campus draws on themes from traditional Chinese design philosophy and Chinese garden culture, and rejects typical hierarchical campus planning. The plan, more akin to a narrative, blends naturally into the surrounding environment, encircling Elephant Hill, and the reuse of existing materials including local tiles and bricks.
